Love Story

Can Mani Ratnam make a movie like this?

Ilayaraja is 32 years old. His lover Kalaiselvi is 24 years old. They have been lovers for the past 10 years. Kalaiselvi’s parents were against this marriage. Therefore, they have threatened both the boy and the girl. The lovers did not listen.

Meantime, Kalaiselvi’s parents decided to fix a marriage for her daughter with some other guy. When the lovers heard this, they complained to the police. Police summoned parents of both parties and told them these two are majors (adults) and advised them for amicable settlement. Kalaiselvi’s parents did not agree.

Ilayaraja took the girl to his parents’ home. They were to be married in a few days in front of his relatives and friends.

On the early morning of the marriage, the bride’s (Kalaiselvi) relatives came with swords and other weapons and beat the heck out of Kalaiselvi and left. She lay in a pool of blood with multiple wounds.

She was admitted to a hospital in Tanjore. She is in the ICU with multiple wounds. Her life is in danger. The groom does not want to lose/separate from her. He tied the holy knot thali (mangal sutra) at the exact auspicious time, 10:30 am, in the ICU.

This is not a fiction Happened last week in Tanjore District in Tamilnadu. Please see the picture below:

  2. yes. This was in the English daily too. I hope and pray she gets out of danger and they lead a happy life.
Even if parents wish to marry her off to some other guy will she be happy? God only knows.

    1. Thanks for your comments Chitra. Their daughter's happiness is not important to them. They give more value to what the society will think.

  3. Fact remains stranger than fiction.
This misnomer 'honor killing' is getting chillingly commonplace and far too frequent.
I cannot understand parents who think the neighbour's response to their supposed loss of izzat is more important than their own child.

    1. Thanks for your comments Sweety. As you correctly pointed out, in India, many parents are worried about what their neighbor will think rather than the happiness of their kids.

  4. Why some people get over-emotional with certain things is beyond my comprehension. Emotion drives violence in this world, which is in turn driven by ignorance.

  6. What is wrong with these people I dont know. Generally, parents are co-operative and nice to children. But, when it comes to marriage, they act as devils. We say that we are progressed. However, most of parents are still against love marriages and have this notion that love marriage will fail and also that it is a shame to the family.

This reminds me of the movie NH10. Such things do happen. They still happen. All we can do is to pray.

I salute Ilayaraja though, he is a brave man and proved that he loves Kalaiselvi more than her own family!

  7. Usually we come across such parents in small towns and villages all over India. They run lives with their myopic reasons like Jadi, kulam, gothram etc. and come with big knifes and iron rods to create havoc in the lives of young people. It happens regularly in the North too. When they make movies where they show such violence and atrocities committed on young modern thinking people, we know that they are only portraying what is reality.
Many movies have already been made on such topics. I have seen a Hindi movie where the hero's newly wed wife gets burned, and still he doesn't leave her, and looks after her. Sometimes we wonder whether in real life such a thing is possible, but then we come across a case as pointed by you and our faith in humanity and love is restored.
    Ilayaraja is a good man.

  8. I hope the girl recovers and they live happily. Its outrageous that for people pride is more important than a life or love. The honor killings always infuriate me. How can people be so brutal? Doesnt life mean a thing to them? Dont they flinch before inflicting such pain not just on the couple but people who love and care about them?

  14. SG, I know i am going to talk like a spoil sport here, but MAYBE, just MAYBE, this could have been avoided. I know love sees no reasoning, love sees no boundary, but when you grow up in a setting where love is forbidden from an early stage...maybe falling in love is foolish. As much as i pray and know that what these two people went through is inhuman, if only they could have practiced some restrain while taking the relationship ahead.
In the end what i see is two grieving mothers and their tormented children. As a mother, my heart goes out to the mothers of these. The women themselves live in a world of suppression maybe and hence are watching their children suffer helplessly.
Its a sad, extremely disturbing fact of our world, where honor killing keeps getting stronger inspite of the opposition against it.But like i said MAYBE they could have gauged or known that this is what the future will hold, and its braver and wiser to avoid it.There are millions and millions of us, who fell in love, but left it at that, cuz we are not brave like these two.

  15. Heartwarming story... May God bless the couple...
I have not heard of such happenings in Dakshina Kannada, my district. But, we are reading similar stories regularly in the news papers here in India... We are talking about human rights and mean time such things are happening. It's really heartbreaking.
