Poor Meghan Markle

We all know American actress Meghan Markle married an unemployed Britisher (Prince Harry) who is still living with his grandmother (Queen Elizabeth). (Not my original. Borrowed from somebody else.)

According to The Cheat Sheet magazine, these are some of the strange food habits at the Buckingham Palace:

Garlic is banned.

Pasta for dinner is unacceptable.

No rice and potato.

No one is allowed to eat shrimp.

They use utensil placement as a way to communicate with staff.

If the queen has finished eating, everyone must stop eating.

If the queen places her purse on top of the table, dinner must end within 5 minutes.

They must always wear a formal attire.

No wonder immediately after their marriage reception ended, Meghan ordered a Shrimp Scampi (Shrimp sautéed in a garlic sauce, tossed with asparagus, tomatoes, and angel hair pasta) from Olive Garden Restaurant,  take out, and asked her unemployed husband to pick it up.

Oh I forgot to mention. With a side order of French fries.

PS:  I am not making this (Shrimp Scampi) up.  Check out the Oliver Garden Restaurant Menu.

  1. Gosh! Those are ridiculous dining rules.
"If the queen has finished eating, everyone must stop eating" is truly bizarre!!

  2. I have heard about some of the rules but Gosh. I wouldnt comment on unemployed prince since I feel lot of women marry the men who are home makers and in Prince’s case he has servants to look after his home. As long as he loves her and gives her steady relationship, nothing else matters.
Regarding the rules in the palace, they seem stricter than an Indian Jain diet- no garlic, no potatoes and above all no rice 😳
With time everything changes, probably in near future these bizarre rules will too!

    1. Thanks for your comments Shesha. I wrote this post with a “tongue-in-cheek” frame of mind. This is meant to be more on the humorous side and not a serious one.

  3. I am reminded of a 1980 film Khubsurat where a strong willed mother in law and her daughterin law’s sister Manju(Rekha) clashed with both being very different personalities. bringing the iron fisted discipline at the house to naught to the unrevealed merriment of others. I hope the strict rules will give way to greater laxity in culinary tastes and table manners!

  4. I thought the times of Queens, Kings & Autocracy is over. But looks like some of us prefer to be reminded of those 'glorious' days from time to time! :)

    1. Thanks for your comments Rajesh. I totally agree with you. Can someone rule over the people because he/she born in a certain family? Noooo.

  5. Though you have written this with humour in mind, at least some of them should be true partially.
Royalties have their own customs and traditions. But the British royalty itself has relaxed a number of such rules.
For example, when Meghan Markle took the wedding vow, she omitted (or allowed to omit) the part that said she would obey her husband.
Another instance was, she broke the royal tradition (or rather, she was allowed to break the royal tradition), and she gave a speech at the evening dinner, which turned out to be a touching one.

  8. As much as i feel sad for Meghan Markle... i see them as a few advantages

Not eating Garlic...you will never have a garlicky breath
You have to stop eating when the queen does - Either she will become a fast eater or it will help her maintain her figure by not getting to eat much
No Pasta/Rice - No Carbs awesome for her figure...

Now she ordering that shrimp scampi....(SG i am a vegetarian, but ur description made my mouth water)
My personal fav at Olive Garden is (Ravioli de Portobello and Lasagna Fritta) oh and the last time i was there i tried the Milan Mai Tai Margarita.

  9. HAha. Right after they got married, I kept seeing posts about what she is no longer allowed to do and it seems like a lot of restrictions. But hey she doesn't have to work and has loads of money. She married a prince. What more could she want! :D :)

  10. Time has blown away numerous unbending rules may they be of rulers or subjects. It looks odd indeed in this 21st century. This bride may break the chain.Good topic.
