Strange Airport Codes

WOW – Willow, Alaska

FUN – Funafuti, Tuvalu 

BUM – Butler Airport, Missouri 

BOM – Mumbai Airport 

MAA - Chennai

DAD – Da Nang, Vietnam 

COW – Coquimbo, Chile 

SAD – Safford, Arizona 

BOO – Bodø, Norway 

ODD – Oodnadatta, Australia 

FAT – Fresno, California 

and finally 

FUK – Fukuoka, Japan

  1. True, the acronyms to denote airports sometimes result in in inapt outcomes! Why do the authorities not revise the acronyms when names of cities are changed like Mumbai or Chennai?

    1. Thank for your comments Mr. KP. Some are hilarious and OK. I would keep MAA (for Chennai) and DAD (for Da Nang). But I would certainly change BOM (Mumbai).

  3. . . . . And less important places are left with acronyms making not much sense. IXR for Ranchi. 😆🤣

    1. Thanks for your comments Kirtivasan. You are correct. They add IX if they cannot come up with a code. For Example: (as you wrote) IXR Ranchi, IXM Madurai, IXS Salem.
