Alternative Air

Maatru Kaatru.  This is a Tamil word which means “alternative air” in English.  I don’t know how far it is true.  It is said that we can breath this alternative air to improve our health.

For example, someone is taking medical treatment for a long time with no improvement.  It is suggested that person go to a different place and take the same medical treatment.  At this time, that person is breathing a different air than he is used to.  It is said that this alternative air will bring lot of improvement to that person’s health.

I have no personal knowledge. I am just conveying what I have read.

When we come back from vacation, we are relaxed and no longer bored with the daily chores.  I am told it is because of breathing a different air during vacation time.  By vacation means, you don’t have to go to a far off place.  Just a different place than where you live.  May be the next town or village.

But it is different in my family.  My family thinks unless you board a 747, it is not a vacation.

  2. Thanks for your comments Anil. And, welcome to my blog. May be I have spoiled my family too much. There are lot of places to visit in California within driving distance. In fact many people from around the world want to visit California. But my family, especially son and daughter, wants to go on a plane to call it a vacation.

Anil, please visit here as often as possible. Thank you.

  5. Our mood changes from the bored routine, I feel. Your children ask for 'real' vacation, right?!

Hope you are all fine over there. Heard/read about the earth quake.

  6. Thanks for your comments Sandhya. We are fine. We live about 80 miles from the epicenter. We felt it but no damage to our home. Thanks for asking.

  7. Maybe it's more to do with our mental set-up (which keeps seeking excitement in new things) than the air per se. Just guessing...

  9. Hey, maybe there's truth in the saying, 'Get some fresh air'!

Hmm,maybe there's different vibes in diff environments. Even when it comes to yoga, all that deep breathing is basically a tool to drive out stagnant air.
Our lungs in normal exhalation retain a fifth of inspired air, so that one gets booted out in deep breathing.

  16. Definitely Maatru Kaatru has some power provided the place is close to nature :) The pure air has magic in it! If it is not close to nature, then the change from the routine life is what making the difference. What say SG?

  17. I think it has meaning because we also feel that change of place makes us feel better..

Yes, 'maatru Kaatru' is what doctors prescribe for many people as part of holistic healing. My son's friend is autistic and he was prescribed this.

  22. That sounds true. I have heard doctors, yoga teachers say that a breath of fresh air will do you lot of good. It actually works :)

I have read somewhere that even looking at green pastures helps you feel better.

    ...
    747 eh? Classy choice I say! :D

  24. Left to myself I would love to relocate to California.
In old movies , they always used to show old people getting heart attacks and their family doctor advising them to go for a change of air to mostly Kashmir / Shimla if it was Hindi movie, if it was a Tamil movie to Ooty / Kodaikanal.
For my husband too it is enough if he can drive to some nearby places in South for a holiday.
For me travelling means really chilling in places, and not hurrying everywhere.

  25. Thanks for your comments Rama. Love to relocate to California? You made the right choice. Please either relocate of San Francisco Bay Area or San Diego. Please avoid Los Angeles area at all costs.

  26. I want to relocate to San Diego only, I have my eyes and mind rooted to that lovely place. No hot cities nor too cold and windy cities for me.
