Republic Day Parade

Now that the 2015 Republic Day is over and Obama has gone home, we all can take our eyes off the television set. Thank God.

It was a pleasure watching the entire parade and pageantry on television. This is the first time for me since I am in Chennai now. I was glued to the television set.

Here are a couple of my personal observations:

Every television station hyped Obama’s visit. Way too much excitement.

I think there is mixed opinion about Mr. Modi’s suit with his own name stripes. I am interested to know what you all think. I personally think it looked ridiculous on him. He is a smart and stylish dresser. I don’t know who gave him this idea. Now he does not have to carry a business card.

I would have been more pleased if his suit had the words “Made in India” instead of his name.

  2. I think, Obama's visit and the hype may have instigated more people to see the Republic day parade, after a long time!

  4. I too didn't like his suit with his name. He promotes Khadi, well, asking others to buy khadi and look at this. He looks good in his kurta and jacket.

I too watched the parade. I liked the school children happily dancing and singing along without any stress and tension, this time.

  5. I think that it is okay... Focus must be given on what was discussed and the handwork that would have gone in arranging the parade.

Having said that, our PM deserves some se;f-indulgence as well.. He is also a human being!

  7. I agree with your most of view, SG... Still, I think, Locomente has a point here.

  8. Well, somebody must have got the idea form Hosni Mubarak, who had a similar suit stitched for himself. And who knows modi may not even have known about it, and after he came to know also, he might have thought, what is wrong for somebody or some group of people have worked hard in doing the embroidery with hand, it is a labor of love, it would be so mean to reject it.
I think both the media and the people now a days have become very critical of each and every move of the ruling party. They always want to see some scheme behind everything uttered by the members of BJP, just like the AAP.
For that matter the dress sense of Mrs. Obama was awful, it was worse than Rani Mukerjee and Vidya Balan, but any of us question it.
Modi looks smart in whatever he wears, and he also speaks well without the help of some notes written by someone like Sonia Gandhi, and others.
I think most people are really jealous that he is doing such a good job, at least much better than all the leaders we have had so far.

  14. Thanks for your comments Mr. Chowla. American media wrote about the nuclear deal only. Very rarely mentioned about the parade and the welcome given to him.

  16. Thanks for your comments Rama. I am not that much into Indian politics. All I wrote is my personal opinion that this "hellogram" suit did not suit him.

  17. Today the Times of India has written about the possible origin of Modi's suit, it was probably made by some foreign company in collaboration with some Indian company.
However, no one is giving out the real details.
I know it is your personal view, but since it is blog and you wanted to know your followers opinion we all shared ours. There is nothing personal, for finally who cares what Modi or anybody wears.

  20. Thanks for your comments Bikram. Mr. Modi is a stylish dresser. But this suit does not suit him. Me think.

  21. Oh, did you discover the suit faux ?
    Does look self-conscious and ridiculous.

As for most Indians, it was a day for leisure and Obama-fatigue.
P.S- Did they show the stray dog's surprise 'guest appearance' on TV?

  22. Thanks for your comments Sweety. He is usually a stylish and smart dresser. I think there is a slip somewhere here. I did not see the dog in the television. But I saw in the newspaper.

  23. Thanks for your comments Ashwini. My personal view is if he is a private citizen, he can wear anything he wants to. This is a free country. But when you are representing a country in front of the world, a little bit extra attention should have been given in dress selection.

When you go for a meeting/conference representing your company, would you wear anything and say this is my personal decision? But in the end all went well.

  24. Without carrying the name tag also, he is 'Modi'.So it was not required. But he has a tailor stitching his dress from long before. He specially designed it. Modi might not have wanted to disappoint him.

I couldn't watch the parade because I was in a wedding ceremony.

I too felt that 'Obama' was elevated to a helicopter of sycophancy which had gone beyond limit.

  26. Long time since I dropped by. i thought you had stopped blogging for a while. Glad to see you back. I thought the suit of Modi was not in good taste. Nor was it right to address Obama as Barack.

  27. To me the suit felt like he was tooo obsessed with himself...
