Once, (ex) President Obama was leaving the White House in a helicopter.
Usually, a U.S. marine soldier will stand guard outside the helicopter. He will salute the President (Commander-in-Chief) when he boards the helicopter.
This day, when Obama came to board the helicopter, the marine soldier saluted him. Obama is supposed to salute him back. But he ignored the marine soldier and boarded the helicopter. Once he was inside the helicopter, he immediately remembered he made a mistake by not saluting back to the marine soldier.
What did Obama then do?
He came down from the helicopter. Shook the marine’s hand and apologized and then boarded the helicopter. See this video clip.
Wow I really like him ... humble and down to earth .... we need more leaders like him.....most of them like to throw their power around and act like they are god....
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Dee. You have very well described Indian politicians. Last week, I read that an Indian politician ordered his followers to ransack a toll booth because the staff there asked him to pay the toll.
DeleteWhat a perfect gentleman he is. Hats off to him. I love him for his simplicity
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Gowri.
DeleteI don't think it was proper to shake hands. Maybe get down, see him and then climb the stairs would be the right etiquette.
ReplyDeleteHe should have thought of madame Michelle's reputation at the least.
It is fine as a gentleman. Couple of lessons. Wrong. Backup for wrong.
DeleteThanks for your comments KIrtivasan. I honestly do not understand your comment. What this incident has to do with Michelle Obama?
DeleteWhat is wrong with a commander in chief shaking hands with a soldier? Is it below his dignity?

That helicopter is huge :)

Thanks for your comments Rajesh. U.S. Presidents usually take helicopter to travel from White House to Andrews Air Force Base, where they will fly in a 747 Air Force one. This helicopter ride is only for 10 minutes. Even in this 10 minute ride, they don't travel alone. He has lot of assistants traveling with him. That is why it is huge. It has a 14 seat capacity.
DeleteThat's very much like Obama.
ReplyDeleteApart from that, in a broad sense, I can even visualise similar mannerisms or traits among a good section of people in many of the developed nations.
Civility, propriety, gratitude, politeness, sensitivity and concern for other persons etc are more widely observed there in interactions among even strangers.
One of my friends in Australia told me once how the police stopped his car for a routine checkup. They asked him to open the trunk of his car, which had many of his personal things stuffed in it.
The police took everything out, put them on the ground and inspected the trunk.
They not only explained to my friend that they were doing it as a part of the security protocol but also apologised for the inconvienence. Needless to say, they didn't find anything incriminating.
At the end of it all, the police themselves put all the stuff back in the trunk, and thanked my friend for the cooperation.
Thanks for your comments Pradeep. You are 100% correct.
DeleteSuch a gentleman!
ReplyDeleteHow many of us actually do this?
Try to set things right & make up & own up when we have been wrong?
Thanks for your comments Anita.
