It is after all just tea. Can a war break out between 2 countries? That too between USA and England?
There was already a problem with USA and England. On December 16, 1773, Boston citizens, angry over imposing taxation without representation, dumped several bags of tea imported by British East India Company into the harbor. That was called “The Boston Tea Party”. This was the first major act of defiance to the British rule by the Americans. This rallied the Americans to fight for independence from the British.
Americans did not get independence from the British. They kicked the British out of their country and declared independence.
Now another brouhaha is happening over tea between USA and England. A Chemistry Professor in USA advised adding a pinch of salt to cups of tea. She also encouraged drinkers to steep their tea quickly by dunking and squeezing the bags.
Her name is Michelle Francl. She said “But even after all these years of drinking tea and researching chemistry, I learned new things about what is in my cup and how to make the very best cup of tea.”
She writes that sodium helps to block a chemical reaction that makes tea taste bitter, and claims squeezing teabags reduces “sour-tasting tannins.”
Her ideas have sparked uproar in England. The US Embassy in London has to distance itself from this research.
UK Government responded: “We appreciate our Special Relationship, however, we must disagree wholeheartedly... Tea can only be made using a kettle.”
The US Embassy made a statement: “The US Embassy will continue to make tea in the proper way — by microwaving it.”
And for now, World War 3 between these two friendly countries was avoided.
Now if this war were to break because of Coffee.... I would be leading it.... but tea....ehhhh maybe my family members LOL.....if I ever reach out for a cuppa tea on a rainy afternoon it would be with ginger, cardamom and some lemongrass....
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Dee. You speak like a finest diplomat.
DeleteTea bags are indeed a mediocre way to make tea. Recently I re-discovered filter coffee and liked it very much. I feel, the harder it is to make, the better is the taste!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Rajesh. So, you a pakka South Indian - a filter coffee aficionado.
DeleteI am with Dee on this issue. I take tea only when the option for coffee is closed!
ReplyDeleteAs usual your post is laced with subtle humour.
HeHeHe. Thanks for your comments Mr. KP.

Thanks for your comments Afshan. Long time No see. Hope you and your family are doing fine.
DeleteI studied the Boston Tea Party in the history class in school. What is now happening is quite interesting. I saw those official government statements, and I was wondering why the UK and the US should be getting involved in a professor's remarks! But it's good fun. In these days we definitely need some humour!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Pradeep. These diplomats have to do something beside attending cocktail parties.
DeleteI have heard war has broken out for the sake of a girl like Helen of Troy but war for tea ha ha As usual you ended the blog edged with humour
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Gowri.
DeleteDiplomacy and politics apart, tea is a great drink.
ReplyDeleteNilgiris tea is for afternoons. I read that in a tea broker shop. Also Nilgiris tea is the major ingredient in Nestea, iced tea.
An interesting blog post, SG.
Thanks for your comments Kirtivasan.
DeleteFor an argument not any mountainous matter is required, disagreement on a silly minute matter can lead to an argument or fight, resulting in the birth of a war even. Nice topic,S.G.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Sarala. Remember the Pig War. War started between USA and Britain n 1859 over a slaughtered swine.
DeleteThat's Tea War!
ReplyDeletePeople have their own preferences. One person I know uses both salt & sugar in his tea.
Not being addicted to either, I am always happy- whether it's coffee or tea though I prefer coffee :)
Thanks for your comments Anita.
