US Politics vs Indian Politics

About a few minutes ago, I was watching “live” President Barrack Obama’s address to the Joint Session of U.S. Congress.

Two of his sentences made me think. His praising the opposition party leaders Senator John McCain and former President George W. Bush.

“…..for those Americans who can't get insurance today because they have pre-existing medical conditions, we will immediately offer low-cost coverage that will protect you against financial ruin if you become seriously ill. This was a good idea when Senator John McCain proposed it in the campaign, it's a good idea now, and we should embrace it”.

Senator John McCain of Republican Party contested against Senator Barack Obama and lost the Presidential election.

“…..So I am proposing that we move forward on a range of ideas about how to put patient safety first and let doctor’s focus on practicing medicine. I know that the Bush Administration considered authorizing demonstration projects in individual states to test these issues. It's a good idea, and I am directing my Secretary of Health and Human Services to move forward on this initiative today”.

Bush was President of USA and belongs to Republic Party, now the opposition party.

About 2 hours ago, I was reading an Indian newspaper in the web. The news was: Miss Jayalalitha called Karunanidhi’s government as a minority government (because he rules Tamilnadu with the help of Congress Party). Therefore, Karunanidhi told the press he is going to address her as Mrs. Jayalalitha from now on.

  1. hmmm, that was really good on president Obama's part to appreciate other's efforts even though they are with the oppositions...thank you for sharing this SG...

it hurts me every time when I see the politicians here making an issue outta one's death just to gain publicity...a specific community is promoted in states, forcing others to follow the traditions of that state, forbidding them from celebrating their own (the MNS party against the north indians in mumbai) etc etc...lemme stop here, or my comment will be longer than ur post...

thank you for sharing this...I wish I knew at least one tech savvy politician, I would have forwarded this link to him for sure..

  2. Thank you for your comments Neha. I really appreciate it. At least, it is ok in North. They go to each other's home for marriage ceremony. In South, particularly in Tamilnadu, even brothers who are belong to different parties cannot go to each others home.

  3. I didn't get the dig that's implied in the Ms & Mrs titles.....but yes, I've always thought that politics in Tamilnadu is in a deplorable state. Whatever one party does, the other party un-does as soon as it comes into power.

  4. LOL!! How can we even imagine the state of affairs in India to be even remotely closer to that of the USA! Well its always been playing blame game for our faltoo netas. Only such a shame that the politicians enjoy their useless "assembly sessions" by staging protests, walking out or by getting suspended. The reality there is that these buggers are wasting OUR money which goes into running the House! I mean our Hard earned money goes into cooling those bloody buggers ass! come think of it if you cant accept the good in other person ( be it your political foe) whats the point in in a leadership position.

well thats the sad story of Indian politics.

    god bless India.

    cheers

  5. In India we have only politicians, no real leaders or statesmaen. Here they criticise each and everything without ever thinking about the merits or welfare of the people.

  6. The most comical part is watching News on each of the channels. They use television media to propagate their own ideas and even news is manipulated.

So better don't watch any news on Tamil channels, because you are not going to get the real one

  8. I am not at all interested in politics as I feel that all politicians are totally corrupted and in India there is nothing else than politics. Whatever the politicians think they do it whether it is right or wrong. But I liked your post very much as you have written very beautifully and I also got good information.

  11. Thanks for your comments Renu. In Tamilnadu, there is no political decency after the death of Mr. Annadurai. He was the one who used the sentence "Maatraan thotathu malligayum manakkum". (The jasmine flower, even if it grows in our opponents garden, will give a nice and exciting smell.

  12. Thanks for your comments Insignia. You are correct. We should never watch news in Tamil TV channels. Major Tamil TV channels are owned by political parties.

  13. Thanks for your comments Shilpa. Since I wrote this blog, an additional information. When Obama was speaking, a Republican Party member shouted "You Lie". Other Republican Party members did not like this. Also, that guy immediately called Obama's Chief of Staff and apologized.

  17. What Barack Obama said about the opposition party is nothing compared to what I do for the opposition.
I’m screwing the opposition every night…literally!

I don’t care if you are from the most famous Democratic family in the USA. Republicans Rule!

  18. Thanks for your comments Arnold. Your party is not in power. I suddenly remember your own words in the movie Terminator 2: Judgement Day. "I know now why you cry".

  19. I wished if Indian politicians followed this. I have never heard any politician praising his opposition here in India. No matter what the topic is or how serious the issue may be...u make to point fingers on each other. This is the low level of politics that we have in India which is a major barrier for our development. The state will always b a complain bb if it is not the party in Center.
