Olympics in India?

Collapsed bridge near the Commonwealth Games

How about Olympics in India? A dream come true?

Statement by Randhir Singh, IOA General Secretary, on July 8, 2004:

“The infrastructure required for hosting the Games would almost be ready during the Commonwealth Games (in 2010) and it would be the right roadmap for holding the Olympic Games (in India) in 2016.”

Farsighted or Far-fetched?

  1. I don't know. I am one of the people who thought they were a bad idea in Vancouver (we are in major debt now) and agreed with those who said that South Africa was way too third-world to be hosting the World Cup. But I'm kind of anti-Olympics anyway. I thin when a place has real social problems to fix it's the height of irresponsibility to invite Coca Cola to come and make money there...

  2. Thanks for your comments Emily. I agree with you. Any country has to fix its "social problems" before venturing into things like Olympics and World Cup.

  3. Are you kidding me?

I would love to see my country hosting an Olympic. But it takes more than just building bridges and sports complexes.

If you want to showcase your country of what it is capable; real way to do is improve the lives of people!!

Everything else will come your way.

I am not happy with the way CWG is turning out. Common man tries hard to earn his living and achieve something and these corrupt leaders eat up the taxpayer's money!

  4. yes, the whole thing has become a joke..Kalmadi controversy, flood threat, village not fit inhabitation, the bridge collapsing and I even read about some bomb scare or something..didn't bother to follow the news though as I suspect it was merely for the purpose of creating a diversion!

  5. Thanks for your comments Insignia. You said it perfectly. Improve the lives of people.

  6. Thanks for your comments Neha. You said it. They could be creating a diversion and at the end cancel the games citing "national security".

May be Mani Shankar Iyer is far sighted.

  7. SG,

    Have Faith.

I tell you a short story. An American came back from India and agreed that GOD exists and for sure it exists in India. People thought he has been to Ashrams to holy place but then he continued

"There is no system, total chaos, no organization, corruption, cannoot trust anyone, people don't listen to each other...but somehow the things work out...IT HAS TO BE GOD"

  8. Trust me SG! Something told me you or A will write about it today!

  14. SG,
Are we ready to host any big sports event?.I am not sure.

Yesterday night only a pedestrian bridge collapsed near the venue of CWG, 27 are injured but this process would have certainly made some richer. Who is accountable?.All are passing the buck. Poor people suffer.

  24. Thanks SG for the free publicity..

hmmm, I see that many are reacting to the whole thing in a sentimental manner..my opinion is that we are not fit to host such huge events at this moment..accepting this fact will help us more than becoming an ostrich..first, let's tackle the corruption then talk about glory!

  25. It puts so much pressure on a country to be as good as the next one. People asked how London would top Beijings Olympics, and my answer was we shouldn't try to be better than them as we shouldn't waste that much money on them. We should do it low key in a British way, and not flamboyantly. Maybe that could lead the way for future games!

    ReplyDelete
  26. India does not need Olympic games.
It will make us more beggar nation.

  27. A disaster waiting to happen it would seem. I know the English teams are talking of pulling out.

  35. I am feeling so bad about the CWG debacle that I am avoiding reading any news related to it, seriously this time we have outdone ourselves in terms of corruption, inefficiency, poor management and the list goes on......
on a different note, thanks a lot for your beautiful comment on my last post :)

  36. Thanks for your comments Shuchita. We have outdone ourselves in terms of corruption? Good. Then a gold medal is assured in this category for us.

  37. Olympic in India!

We already have a looming disaster in the form of Commonwealth Games.

I think India should think about its beggars and starving millions first.

Thanks for your comment on my blog.

  40. Thanks for your comments Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Giorgos PAPANDREOU.

You are not a bankrupt nation because you hosted the 2004 Olympics. You were bankrupt ever since you hosted the first Olympiad in 1896.

Good Luck to you. I got to tell you this. Your family is no match to India's Karunanidhi family.

  41. Olympics in India would be the best way to improve the artificial landscape of the country, reduce some pollution, tuck in some more cleanliness, add some greenery... like how those over night trees and lawns come up when there is a NRI meet or the arrival of the president in a state :P

That should have been the outcome of the CWG also... Unfortunately, what a mess!! Shame on whoever has made this big big mess.. and ya CWG would be suitably shifted to South Africa, which has hosted as many as 3-4 World class games in the past 2 years because of national security in india!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Enough! No more after CWG - that is if they are hosted at all. And for India's sake, I hope it passess off without any disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks for your comments PNA. Very valid points. I think they will get out of this by saying "national security".

  44. Thanks for your comments Radha. As for as corruption is rampant, nothing good will happen.
