The Games Begin

Today, October 3. The Commonwealth Games Begin - At the cost of many, many billions of dollars.

But this lady does not care. She is concerned about feeding her hungry, crying child.

(We saw Endhiran movie this Friday. Wanted to write my view on Endhiran. But I thought this is more important than that movie. Will write on Endhiran in a couple of days.)

  1. Hi, so would you get to see the CWG?
Everything is running smoothly despite some news people who are always fishing for something to go wrong. Now that there was no violence after the Ayodaya verdict too, these people have to keep their trap shut. The universe is yet to throw something sensational for these people to report, till then we Indians can peacefully enjoy the games.

but indeed there are more serious concerns that needs to be handled. nice post.

  3. a picture speaks thousands words..yes, organizing such games do have advantages for the country, but if the same amount of money is spent on those in need of better health and education, then in the long run, it will be helpful..

  4. Precisely my reason for disliking things like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games when there are so many other problems. However, I'm a bit of a hypocrite because I do really enjoy the World Cup. Oh well.

  5. Disparity at its best...the most in India. Rich are very rich and poor are...

  6. Thanks for your comments Rama. Yes, we Indians can peacefully enjoy the games, except millions of people like this lady shown in the picture.

  7. Thanks for your comments Rajlakshmi. You are right. Serious concerns about a mother struggling to feed her hungry child should be handled first before any CWG.

  8. Thanks for your comments Neha. You and I are on the same wave length. Yes, this money could have been spent for better health and education.

  9. Thanks for your comments Emily. Don't worry. There is no harm in being hypocrite once in a while. As a matter of fact, most of us are "limousine liberals".

  10. Thanks for your comments A. You said it perfectly.

  11. Yes CWG began in Delhi today and everything so far seems to be going peacefully. Yes, the tax payers money could have been spent in a better way.

  12. What good is CWG? 7000+ crores of money; if only if had been spent to take care of the welfare and well being of the people.....Alas!!

  13. Thanks for your comments Kiran. As you said, tax payers money could have been spent in a better way.

  15. May be next time when I see someone selling such things I will stop to buy one even if I don't really care for it.

  17. The opening ceremony went off smoothly and beautifully, SG!

I have noticed that these people, like in the photograph always seem to be happy in their own world. If I want to buy something from them, street vendors, vegetables or fruits or anything else, I never bargain.

  18. Thanks for your comments Sandhya. You are a person of action. Not just words.

  19. Yes Sg that indeed is the irony of life...on the one side we have money to decorate our city and on the other we have hunger decorated in rags...

  20. What the hell are the Commonwealth Games?
Never heard of it...and I'm sure you haven't heard about it either...except for the recent negative press.

Just based off your memory (don't GOOGLE it) - when were the previous Games played?
Where was it played? Which country won the most events last time?
Where are the Games going to be held next time...after India hosts it in 2010?

    Anyone? Anyone?

Waste of money, waste of time, waste of energy, waste of resources.

Yeah, we were also under British rule at one time...then we gave them 2 options.

Option 1 - Get out of our country right now.
Option 2 - Get the HELL out of our country RIGHT NOW.

    Regards,
The USA - Land of the Free and Home of the (we don't give a crap about these games) Brave

  23. Thanks for your comments The USA. You are right. Majority of the Indians have no idea where the previous CWG was held, where will the next CWG will be held, and which country won the most “gold” during the last CWG. But for the sake of celebrating, let us also join the crowd and say “ra ra”.

Suppose USA did not “declare their own” independence from England by kicking them out and, instead, “request” independence from England, then they will also be participating in the CWG. I wonder how many gold medals they will be grabbing.

  24. Thanks for your comments Bedazzled. My post about Endhiran is going to be posted on Tuesday morning 6:30 am Indian Time. It is not a review. It is what went through my mind while watching the movie. I hope you read and comment. Thanks.

  25. Yes, the CWG is on, there are many issues which needs immediate attention here. Hope things will improve like the CWG show. I really liked what I saw during the opening ceremony. Presentation was really good.

  26. A point well made - thanks for bringing our attention to the other side of the story, away from all the glitter and hype.

  28. @ seeing this picture, even i wish if situation in India could have been as in the USA, there is no huge difference between the income lines of people.they have a minimum "wage " /salary fixed on a hourly basis.whatever job a person does ,may be a road worker,a maintenece guy ,a mall front desk cashier, they are all payed atleast $8to 10 per hour.so if this was the case in India ,and this could have been started how different it would be!and the polpulation in India for the size of the country is the main issue.right SG?

  29. @ SG ,do tell us the reviews of endhiran..:)

  30. Thanks for your comments Chitra. I hope other "things" also improve just like the CWG show.

  33. Thanks for your comments Raji. I agree with you. You are 100% correct.

I will be writing the Endhiran post today (since I don't have that much work today) and will publish at 6 PM California time.

  34. That was very touching, the way you wrote it. I have no words to say in return, except a feeling of hopelessness that we, as a young, vibrant and upcoming nation, have failed to contribute individually and collectively to situations as depicted in your post.

  35. Thanks for your comments Sanand. I have the same feeling as you. We all have the same feeling. For example, please refer to Neha's and Insignia's comments

  37. Hosting the CWG does make us Indians very proud, despite the bad mouthing by the media of the failures of the govt in organizing this mega event. Wish the Indian media got more mature and reported incidents that truly should prick every politicians heart and make them guilty of their corrupt nature. We can always talk for hours together about how corrupt our Indian system is, but most of us fail to do the basic duty of every Indian citizen - casting their valuable vote to elect their government. Lets each one of us be responsible to take the blame of what state our country is right now and stop pointing fingers at each other.
