U.S. Presidential Election

Donald Trump has been elected as the 45th President of the United States of America. Here are my observations.

Let me tell you this to start with. I am not a supporter of Trump. Both candidates are not qualified. I thought Trump is better of the two evils. So I wanted him to win.

In US, all the television networks (Except Fox News) are left wing liberals. Same goes for all the newspapers. Therefore, they behaved like a propaganda machine for Hillary Clinton. Whenever there is bad news about Hillary, they downplayed it. Good news about her, they gave prominent headlines. Same way, good news about Trump, they downplayed it. Bad news about him, they gave prominent headlines.

The only network supporting Trump, Fox News, behaved like his propaganda machine.

I read 4 newspapers a day. When I read an article, I give more importance to the comments rather than the article. Nowadays American journalists do not report the news. They write their own opinion and push their hidden agenda. Comments reflect what the general public really thinks.

Whatever Trump said during his campaign are all election year political rhetoric. He cannot implement all he said he would do. There are checks and balances. The U.S. Senate will not allow him to do whatever he wants.

The most unlucky is Hillary Clinton. She lost the chance to become the first female President of the United States of America. Her Email server problem is still looming over her head. Another problem is with the Clinton Foundation. Mr. Trump, during the campaign, has said he will appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her, if elected.

But President Obama, before leaving the office on January 20, 2017, with a stroke of a pen, can pardon Hillary Clinton, for any crimes committed by her related to her emails and her foundation.

Will Obama pardon Hillary Clinton?  I think he will.

In my opinion, Hillary should have picked Sanders as her Vice President. That pair would have won very easily. The current Vice President, Joe Biden, was asked to compete among the democrats to be their nominee for President. But Biden blinked and did not enter the race. If Biden was the democratic candidate in lieu of Hillary, I think Trump would have (I am quoting an Indian term here) lost his deposit.

Looks like Richard Verma, US Ambassador to India, will be packing his bags soon and go back to USA.

PS: Counting the votes in a Presidential election is very complicated. Even most of the Americans do not understand this.  This topic will be my next post.

  2. After watching the debate of the 'to be Presidents' and reports in the media, I thought that both are not good candidates but Hillary is a bit better of the two. My son also said that both are crap but Hillary is a better crap. Well, Mr. Clinton also had no morals and Trump too uses vulgar language...huh, it is not easy to chose! Well, let us wait and see...hope he brings down terrorism and there is no war in his term.

  6. Whether one likes or not,the majority has voted for Trump. It is hoped that some of the promises he made during election issues remain a rhetoric and that measures he would implement are mellowed, humane and in the interests of America.it is also wished that he includes in his team good and capable men and women in different fields who would advise him honestly without fear.I wish him good luck.

  7. Like India, the Americans too were left with no choice, they probably thought an unknown devil is better than a known devil. Both are use less, and I only hope Trump doesn't turn out to be like our own Kejriwal, who only talks and does nothing, and always bent on creating some chaos by hook or crook.
Trump maybe impeached also if lets power rule over other more important things. As for Hillary, looks like America is not yet ready for a woman President, really sad for all the women in the US.
She may be corrupt, but then Trump is no saint. And for all we know she must be blackmailing Obama too, for one never knows what goes on behind closed doors of high places.
You have 4 years to watch this President perform, or maybe see him impeached before that itself. America was already in a big mess, now they have brought more mess on themselves. As every American would say,"God Bless America"

    1. Thanks for your comments Rama. It is good to see you here after a long time. We throw the word "Impeach" very loosely. It is not that easy to impeach the President of the United States. Also, his own party controls both the Senate and the House.

    2. Good to see here the analogy with Kejriwal. I agree with that comparison. Trump is a different version of our Kejriwal, or even our Modi. Hillary's script was a predictable script. Trump's was unusual. Now, let us see, how he performs.

  8. I have tried to understand the US Presidential system & selection, but it's Greek & Latin for me. I wished Hillary would win, but frankly, I did not know much about either of the candidates.

  10. I fully agree with your assessment, SG. This is a huge mea culpa moment for the US media.

There is a very nice article in IJNet, on "What journalists can learn from the 2016 US presidential election". Thought it is written in the US context, it is applicable to journalists around the world, including India.

    https://ijnet.org/en/blog/what-journalists-can-learn-2016-us-presidential-election?utm_source=bulletin&utm_campaign=1114&utm_medium=email

Politics anywhere is a lot about perception. And, it's not just one factor that contributes to victory or defeat. Each person will talk about the factors that he or she is familiar with. In India too we have plenty of examples of right from Indira Gandhi days to Arvind Kejriwal to illustrate the vagaries of electoral politics.

I am not surprised at the compromises Trump has been making in the past few days with regard to Obamacare, the Wall, marriage equality etc. He has already said that Hillary's email issue is not as big as issues like employment, taxation, healthcare etc.

Though these are indications that Trump isn't going to be too different, surely he will put in place policies that will have the unique Trump stamp on them.

O, yes, I don't think any nation has an electoral process as complicated as the one in the US. I have had many occasions, as part of my work, to understand and demystify the process. I will surely look forward to your next blog piece.

  11. I very much expected from you a post on this subject and here is it .Thank you.Majority of the Indians support the view given by you.'The lesser of the evil principle' worked here. But in the USA the presidents stand for the interest of the country, I think, may it be X or Y. Here only the vote bank aiming at the proceeding election.

The out going President seemed to be a balanced personality, didn't he?
    I liked your view.

  12. Sorry, SG,I wanted to ask this also. What is your opinion about Mr.Obama? Even if he has proved his worth, no use, since he cannot have a third turn unlike India where one can contest from womb to tomb. Am I right,SG?Expecting the next post on counting.

  15. we in India watched too, since it would have repercussions someday on our lives. Esp with 'outsiders should be kicked out' statements.
I guess reporters there are no different from here in India. Or perhaps they failed to gauge real emotions in voters. Or perhaps they relied too much on social media - that's one place where people fake emotions rather than fight peer pressure. So all the bottled emotions came out in the voting box.
    Lets wait & watch.
