Marriage Proposal

She worked as a bartender in Melbourne, Australia. She was a good looking girl. She met a dashing young man in the bar where she worked. He fell in love with her. One day he proposed to her and asked for her hand in marriage.

This was the most significant moment in their lives. He wanted her to remember this day and moment and treasure.

Ordered a dozen red roses and picked them up himself at the shop. Wrote the card to say, "Will you marry me?" and put the diamond in a presentation box with the roses. Invited her for dinner in his home. Presented the flowers during a candlelight dinner. (I don't know how he exactly proposed. This is my imagination.)

It is a great honor when another person offers to spend the rest of their life with you within the sacred vows of marriage. It shows caring and respect for you.

But did she say “yes”? No. Did she say “no”? No. She said: "I want to say, yes, but I really want to think about it some more. This is so unexpected. You do understand, don't you?".

He was a gentleman. He said he will wait for her answer however long time it may take.

One of her main concern was he was a much younger man. Women marrying younger men are not a taboo anymore. However, she was old fashioned. So she wanted time to think about it.

He waited. He waited. He waited.

Finally, she said “yes” and accepted his marriage proposal last month on her birthday. It was her 100th birthday.

He proposed to her 40 years ago. He was 30 years younger than her.

(This is a real story that really happened. Names have been withheld. Storyline is a little bit tweaked.)

  1. Oh my!! He did wait however long it took, didn't he?

Its surprising to see few people who are true and remain devoted. Its rare these days.

  6. Thanks for your comments Radha. We see the movies and serials and say this will not happen in real life. As you said, sometimes real truth is more unbelievable.

  10. She must be 60 then and he 30.

Hmmm so I am wondering a 60 yr old lady working in bar as bartender? Hmmm hmmm hmmm...nice one:)

  11. Thanks for your comments Numerounity. Yes, at age 60 she was still working. So she must not be rich. Therefore, it is apparent that he was not looking for a "sugarmomma" (opposite of sugardaddy). Must be true love.

  12. Thanks for your comments Neha. What you said is very true. Love defies age, logic, social status, and many more.

  13. Since it is a true story I must believe it, but i am too skeptical.a 30 year old man falling for 60 yr old woman..In India Ihave heard only one succesful story like this of Amrita Preetam and Imroz.

  14. Thanks for your comments Renu. In Western culture, men falling in love with women older than them is a common occurrence. But this much age difference is uncommon. And that too waiting for 40 years to get an answer is more unbelievable. As Radha said truth is stranger than fiction.

I am guessing they aren't Indians.

  16. I don't get it and I don't believe it.
Forget the fact that he waited 40 years.
I'm just saying why would any young guy marry someone who is significantly older than him?
It makes no sense to me.

This story would be even crazier if they invited her ex husband to the circus wedding.

    Regards,
    Ashton Kutcher

    p.s. wait a minute...was I just "Punk'd" with that story?

  24. Thanks for your comments Ashton. Yes, 30 years older is unacceptable. May be like you and your wife Demi Moore, 17 years is OK. These people just got engaged. I am sure they will follow your and Demi's example and invite her ex-husband (if he is alive) for the marriage.

Just a piece of advice. Heard your step daughter has a crush on you. Just keep your interests on older women only and don't go near your step daughter.

  27. Thanks for your comments numerounity. I understand what you are saying.

She was not "hired" at the age of 60. She was 60 years old and working there when he met this guy. I am just guessing she must have been working there for a long time. She must have been beautiful otherwise why would a 30 year old guy fall for her.

I do not know about Australia. But I know about USA. Here, there is no "mandatory" retirement age. There are strict laws against "age discrimination" and are being enforced vigorously. Therefore, employers cannot get rid of older employees. They can work as long as they are physically and mentally able to.
