Curling

I am not talking vector calculus here, where the curl is a vector operator. I am not also talking about curling hair or curling iron. The guy in this picture is an excellent example to vouch for me.

Curling is a sports event in the Winter Olympics. I did not know this until this morning when I was watching the 2010 Winter Olympics now being held in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

It is a team sport. Two teams compete against each other. Each team has four players. Each player slides heavy polished granite stones down the ice. There is a circle marked at the far end called the house.

The purpose for each team is to slide 16 stones. Whichever team’s stones are closer to the center of the house is the winner. When the stones are sliding in the ice, there are 2 players broom or brushes the ice to direct the movement of these stones.

This has some similarities to lawn bowling or shuffleboard. The commentator was telling that this game was invented in Scotland. It became an official sport in the Winter Olympic games since 1998. Canada won the Gold in the 2006 Olympics.

My impression of this sport? It was as thrilling and exciting as watching grass grow or watching paint dry.

I think Figure Skating and Slalom are very exciting and interesting to watch in Winter Olympics. What do you think? Please don't say the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony. They are always very exciting and interesting to watch in any Olympics.

  8. Thanks for your comments HaRy. If we bring golli and kabadi, we may win the first time. And then onwards we will start to lose to Germans and Australians. Look what happened to field hockey.

  10. Thanks for your comments Insignia. I love to watch figure skating too. Gymnastics is super in Summer Olympics.

You asked how about bringing in cricket. I hope you mean in Summer Olympics. Last week they have decided to include cricket beginning the 2020 Summer Olympics, along with sport climbing and power boating.

  13. I attended the 2002 Winter Olympics LIVE in Salt Lake City.

I remember when I was buying tickets on Ebay and other places that Curling tickets and Cross Country Skiing tickets were selling for waaaayyyy below face value because they are absolutely the most boringest events to watch.
They couldn't give those tickets away.

I would rather listen to you talk about your aunt's toe surgery than watch Curling.
I would rather have a conversation about deep feelings with my in-laws than watch Cross Country Skiing.

On the flip side, even though I am not a fan of figure skating...getting tickets to that event are impossible.
I happened to get lucky enough to watch it LIVE.

To me, Ice Hockey is the most exciting event at the Winter Olympics - for team competition.
One Man Luge, is the most exciting for individual competition.
Yes, I saw both of these LIVE in 2002 as well...so I'm speaking from experience.

The most overrated event is ski-jumping.
Looks somewhat exciting on TV but it's pretty weak when you watch it at the event.
No thanks, I'd rather chew on broken glass than watch that again.

  17. Thanks for your comments The Cagey Bee. I know you attended the SLC Winter Olympics in person. Now thanks for giving me all the details.

Ski-jump is awesome to look in TV but boring in "live".

I am glad you like one man Luge. For the first time in history, India has sent an athlete to participate in Winter Olympics this year. He is in the one man Luge competition. His name is Shiva Kesavan.

Just FYI. This year's most popular and favorite athletes are Bobsledders from Jamaica.

  19. Thanks for your comments Rajlakshmi. Figure skating is so good to watch. But many people think figure skating is an "art" rather than "sports" and therefore should not be included in Winter Olympics.

  20. Thanks for your comments HaRy. Sila sila samayam naanum kooda sariya solluvane. (Very rarely I can also say correctly.)

  21. Oops. Sorry The Cagey Bee. I made some factual errors in my reply.

This is Shiva Kesavan's 4th olympic appearance. He has been participating since 1998, when he was only 17 years old.

This year, there are 3 Indian athletes. They are Shiva Kesavan (Luge), Tashi Lundup (Cross-country), and Jamyang Namgiyal (Alpine Skiing).

Just a note for all readers: I could have very easily deleted my previous comments to The Cagey Bee and substituted the correct version. I did not do so to show that I admit my mistakes openly.
