Consultation

Just read a news item Prime Minister Modi had consutations with elite sports persons on the ongoing situation in India due to the coronavirus pandemic. I could not help LOL. If he appealed to them for donations then that is a different matter. “Consultations” with them? What is their expertise? Cricket players’ only expertise is they know how to connect their bat with a ball. Boxer Mary Kom expertise is in throwing a right-handed jab.

When did they become subject matter experts on coronavirus? What is the agenda for next week? Video conference with roadside tea stall owners?

Here are some other useless consultations:

President Donald Trump called baseball player Alex Rodriguez seeking advice on corona virus response. This noted infectious disease expert Alex Rodriguez’s only qualification is he knows how to hit a ball out of the park for a home run.

Biden wants to compete with Trump. He has established a Public Health Advisory Committee to advice him on corona virus. Hey Uncle Joe. What are you going to do with that advice? Trying to form a shadow government, ala a British tradition?

PS: Here is a news you will chuckle. Yesterday (April 2) the Governor for the state of Georgia, Brian Kemp, said he just learned about how coronavirus spreads. Governor of a state in USA did not know how coronavirus spreads?  Come on Brian.  Give me a more believable story.

  1. Maybe the consultations are not directly to get details or info on Coronavirus, but maybe to convince them to go on TV and talk to the public about being safe. Public might follow a celebrity's advice more than PM's.

    1. You could be right. God help the citizens if they have more faith on these celebrities than the Prime Minister.

  2. Agree with Dee, the consultations may to urge public to practice safe distancing and stay at home and of course contribute for the "PM Cares"

    1. Thanks for your comments Shilpa. If sports people have more influence than the Prime Minister....what can I say.

  3. Not everyone is an expert like me in three or more fields, or can be highly successful at several different occupations. Just call me Midas because everything I say or do can turn into gold. If you want my opinion, catch me on social media.

    1. Thanks for your comments Arnold. I know you are the Terminator. You also killed the predator. I am waiting for you to say "I am bauk" and kill this coronavirus.

  4. Why this sudden negativity towards everybody. We certainly don't need this during such crisis.Being positive can do a lot of good to everybody around us including ourselves. Please, it was not meant to offend you.

    1. Thanks for your comments Rama. It is not negativity towards everyone. I am just calling the play as I see it. As Pradeep said it (the meeting with sports persons) didn't seem to convey the message it sought to actually convey. No offense taken.

  5. Nothing wrong with meeting sports celebrities, and enlisting their support in this massive fight against the pandemic. We have a major crisis on hand and only if everyone joins as one we will have any success.

But somewhere, it didn't seem to convey the message it sought to actually convey. I think the fault lay in the way it was publicized, with someone saying it's like consulting doctors to discuss IPL.

Probably if this meeting with sportspersons was labelled as part of a series of meetings the PM is having with various people (like doctors, economists, police officials etc) involved in the fight against the pandemic, it would have looked better, and put the meeting in the right context.

    1. Thanks for your comments Pradeep. You are absolutely correct. They could have packaged this in a better way.

  6. These tactics might be to use the celebrities to tap their huge fan-following. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they want to spread a good message that benefits people.

    1. Thanks for your comments Rajesh. Nothing wrong in tapping their huge fan-following. But the wording "consultation" was not the right one. They could have packaged this in a better way.

  7. We have gods in every field like cricket and cinema! What they speak is listened to in great faith by their innumerable fans. They wield vast influence.PM rightly takes the help of all, not necessarily as experts, to spread the message he wishes to convey.

  9. What Parthasarathi sir said is correct because when Modi does something, he may have a clever idea behind it. It will benefit in many ways. It is an advertisement. So altruistic people will come forth with ideas and funds. Interesting read.
