Thala (Dhoni)

M.  S. Dhoni was in New York on vacation.  He had shaved his head.

Indian cricket player Wasim Jaffer who is famous for his Twitter added a quirky caption to describe Dhoni’s picture.

Thalai Lama

Almost everyone in Tamil Nadu loves the captain of Chennai Super Kings.  They affectionately call him “Thala” which in Tamil means Leader.

I was talking to a friend of mine (Madhu) about this.  He said if Dhoni run in a Tamil  Nadu election as a Chief Minister candidate he will win hands down.

I was thinking about that afterwards.

Many Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers do not have Tamil as their mother tongue.  Annadurai and Karunanidhi are Telugu origin.  MGR is a Malayali.  Jayalalitha is Kannadiga born.  Rajnikanth who wanted to be a CM is Kannadiga/Marathi

So why not Thala (Dhoni) be the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu?

What do you think?

  2. While all others you mentioned know Tamil fluently, Dhoni doesn't. If he can learn the language, why not? :)

  3. I am not so sure about your friend’s assessment. MSD is popular amongst youngsters who follow cricket. IPL21 may be his last and he may fade away thereafter. Politics is a different ball game and calls for different skill set.

  4. Karunanidhi was born in Tamil Nadu. In fact the village where he was born is close to my native place.
Cricket is a money spinner in India. Dhoni got a chance to be the skipper of Chennai Super Kings. Must have earned in crores.
Rupee is stronger than dollar, when it comes to cricket.

  5. Not sure if Dhoni is keen to be a politician, though he might be very popular. But quite possible people in TN could elect him.

    1. Thanks for your comments Pradeep. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Anything is possible in TN because individual hero worship is very common there.

  6. If he has some political acumen and if T.N elects him as the C.M, T.N will be lucky at least for one and a half tenures, he will not be corrupt. But later politics will drag him to the bribery-looting- corruption synonymous company. Anyway charming topic.

    1. Thanks for your comments Sarala. You are correct. The local politicians will drag him into all the bribery and corruption.
