Recently there was a famous marriage in Bangalore. The bride has a B. Tech degree in Bioengineering but chose to become a professional Carnatic music singer.
I have read about a few Tamil movie actresses have medical degrees but decided to be in the movies.
I have also read many IIT graduates have qualified and became members of the Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service.
My thinking is why do not they have clear thinking about what career they want before joining these professional courses. These professional degrees are “wasted” when someone pursues another career path. These students acquire deep technical expertise in their respective field. But when they choose to have a career in a different field, their highly specific skills may go underutilized.
It is difficult to get admission into these programs. If after graduating they choose a different career, it means they “took up” a space in the program that could have been offered to someone more committed to use the degree in its intended field.
It is a waste that the valuable skills and knowledge acquired are not benefiting society.
In india, they study BTech. They dream of getting a good job with good salary. But once they successfully completed the course some of them are not getting a good job or no job with good pay.what is wrong in choosing a different field to earn for their life.
ReplyDeleteIt is India with lots of unemployment issue.
Thanks for your comments Anonymous. It is very rare that an MBBS or an IIT student is not "getting a good job".
DeleteIt's difficult to know, at that young age, what one prefers to do in life.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Rajesh. These MBBS and IIT students are super smart. They should be able to think independently.
DeleteLet us leave aside an engineer or doctor choosing music. The civil services like IAS IFS IRS are now manned by generalists who do MA or MSc. The UPSC examination though tough cannot match the high rigour or standard of JEE. Certain infusion of technical people from engg and medical would add worth and expertise in some areas that is lacking presently in civil services.
ReplyDeleteBut the point about wastage of a seat is valid and well taken especially when the number of seats in prestigious IITS or IIMS are limited for the number competing. The government needs to open more such centres in every state with affordable fees
Parental pressures play lesser part these days. The students are aware of their limitations and aptitudes.
Thanks Mr. KP for your comments. I agree with you that parental pressures play lesser part these days. As you said, the government needs to open more such centers in every state with affordable fees.
DeleteI fully agree with you SG honestly. The qualified doctors like Sai Pallavi and athithi Shankar (daughter of Enthiran movie director Shankar) have become actors wasting 2 medical seats which could have been allotted to deserving candidates. Atleast Sai Pallavi has become a successful actress. The other one has become a failure in the acting field. They could have pursued their interest without wasting 2 solid medical seats.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Gowri.
DeleteI appreciate your excellent, outstanding observation with which I fully agree with you. If they are really dedicated to these fields they wouldn't have chosen other ones stealing the opportunity of deserving candidates Focus on your outstanding observation SG
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Anonymous. I wish you had given your name so that I could give you proper credit.
