Very sorry to hear Actor, Director, Producer Bhagyaraj has passed away. Our whole family loved all his movies. To name a few Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, etc etc. 

My wife and I had an opportunity to meet him for just 10 seconds. It was hilarious. He and his wife was visiting San Francisco Bay Area. He stayed in a rich couple’s house. They gave a reception/party for him. We happened to be friends of that rich couple. 

We were also invited. I was talking to my wife. Bhagyaraj was talking to his friends a few feet away from us. We never knew while talking to his friends he was also listening to our conversation. 

I was telling my wife: “What was the movie he acted in which the thrilling climax was shot in a train from Ooty to Mettupalayam. I loved the movie but unable to remember the title”. Before my wife could reply, Bhagyaraj who was standing a few feet away and talking to his friends leaned back and told us: Vidiyum Varai Kaathiru and went back to talk to his friends.

Our whole family loved his acting. 

May he rest in peace.

S. Ramesh, Minister for HR&CE

Tamil Nadu politics witnessed a historic transformation in 2026 with the emergence of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) under the leadership of actor-turned-Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Among the most inspiring stories to emerge from this political wave is that of S. Ramesh, age 32, the young MLA from Srirangam who rose from an ordinary family background to become the Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE). 

His journey is not one of privilege or political dynasty. It is a story of perseverance, education, hard work, and the power of talent being recognized at the right moment. S. Ramesh comes from a financially modest family in Srirangam. His father, Mr. Srinivasan, works as a cook at the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, daily offerings for God, serving devotees and temple staff with dedication for many years. His mother works as a house-help for a wealthy family, contributing tirelessly to support the household and ensure her son received a proper education. 

Despite financial struggles, Ramesh’s parents believed deeply in education and encouraged him to study hard and build a better future. Their sacrifices became the foundation of his success story. Ramesh pursued engineering and successfully graduated as an engineering professional — a major achievement for a young man from his economic background. Today, he leads a simple family life with his wife, who is a homemaker, and their young child.

One of the most remarkable turning points in Ramesh’s life came through his natural gift for public speaking. Known locally as an excellent orator, Chief Minister Vijay reportedly heard him speak for the first time. Impressed by his confidence, communication skills, and deep understanding of people’s problems, Vijay immediately recognized his potential as a future political leader. That single speech became life-changing. Believing that politics needed educated and sincere youngsters from ordinary backgrounds, Vijay personally offered Ramesh the opportunity to contest from the prestigious Srirangam constituency on behalf of TVK.  Contesting under the TVK banner, S. Ramesh secured a massive victory with more than one lakh votes, defeating candidates from major established parties. Following TVK’s victory and formation of the government, Chief Minister Vijay appointed S. Ramesh as the Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE). The appointment drew attention across the state because the HR&CE department oversees temple administration and religious institutions throughout Tamil Nadu. For many people in Srirangam, the appointment carried emotional significance — the son of a temple cook had now become the minister overseeing temple administration across the state. 

The HR&CE portfolio was previously held by a minister from the DMK government. During that period, several controversies emerged regarding temple administration and religious practices. One issue that drew significant public attention was the refusal to permit lighting arrangements at Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple despite observations and directions from the Madras High Court. The matter became a major topic of discussion among devotees and the general public across Tamil Nadu. With S. Ramesh now taking charge as the Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, many people across Tamil Nadu have expressed happiness and optimism. Supporters believe that his humble background, deep understanding of temple culture through his family roots, and respectful approach toward devotees will bring positive change to the department. For many citizens, especially devotees and temple-going families, Ramesh’s appointment symbolizes a fresh beginning — one where tradition, administration, and public sentiment can work together harmoniously under a young and people-centric leader.

Cabinet Appointments

U.S. Presidents sometimes appointment members of the opposition party to cabinet positions (like Secretary roles). This is often done to bring in expertise. Here are a few examples:

Barrack Obama (Democrat) kept Republican Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense. He also appointed Ray LaHood (Republican) as Secretary of Transportation. 

Joe Biden (Democrat) appointed Republican Lloyd Austin as Defense Secretary.  

George W. Bush (Republican) appointed Democrat Norman Mineta as Secretary of Transportation. 

Donald Trump (Republican) appointed James Mattis (Independent) as Defense Secretary.

Abraham Lincoln appointed several political rivals. 

Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrat) appointed Republican Henry L. Stimson as Secretary of War during World War 2.

Since many people in India want to follow many American practices, why don’t they follow the above and appoint Shashi Tharoor as External Affairs Minister or Indian Ambassador to the United Nations or United States. 

At State level, appoint K. Annamalai as in-charge of Police in Tamil Nadu. Appoint Palanivel Thiaga Rajan as Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu. 

Will they do? I don’t think so.

Jersey Number 42

April 15, 2026 – day before yesterday – in USA all professional baseball players wore number 42 in their jersey. Why? Here is a short explanation. 

There was a famous black baseball player named Jackie Robinson. He was born in 1919 in the USA. He was not allowed to play in the regular Major League Baseball which was reserved only for white players. Jackie Robinson first played in the Negro Leagues for a team called The Kansas City Monarchs. 

Jackie was very brave and faced unfair treatment. He helped change sports and made them more equal. People remember him as a hero who brought change. He was admitted into the white boys only Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947. He started to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. 

Per Wikipedia, The Dodgers signing Robinson heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, which had relegated black players to the Negro Leagues since the 1880s. 

Jackie wore jersey number 42. In order to celebrate his joining the Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947, all professional baseball players wore jersey number 42 on April 15, 2026. 

After reading about him, I had a few thoughts. India won the cricket World Cup on June 25, 1983 for the first time under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. Unfortunately, in those days Indian players did not wear any number or their names in their jerseys. They first started wearing jerseys in 1992. First time Kapil Dev wore jersey number 2. Why not celebrate winning the cricket world cup in 1983 under the heroic leadership of Kapil Dev by all cricketers wearing jersey number 2 this year on June 25? 

  

Or, how about Tendulkar?  He made his test debut on November 15, 1989.  He was wearing jersey number 10.  How about all cricket players wear Number 10 in their jersey on November 15?

Or is that too much politics and controversy in India?

I do not know anyone in BCCI. If any reader has any contact with BCCI, he/she can take this suggestion to them.

Poor Planning in the Super 8 Schedule

The Super 8 schedule for the T20 World Cup has been made in a poorly planned way. Many fans are confused and disappointed with how the teams were placed. Let us look at the details in simple terms.

 The tournament began with the Group Stage. There were four groups: 

• Group A 

• Group B 

• Group C 

• Group D 

From each group, the top two teams qualified for the Super 8. That means 8 teams moved to the next round. 

In the Super 8 stage, there are two new groups: 

• Super 8 Group A 

• Super 8 Group B 

But here is where the problem begins. 

Instead of mixing the teams fairly, the organizers placed: 

• All the number one teams (group winners) into Super 8 Group A 

• All the number two teams (runners-up) into Super 8 Group B 

This decision does not make sense. 

Putting all the top teams together in one group is not fair. These teams worked hard to finish first in their groups. But now they have to compete against other strong group winners. At the same time, all the second-place teams are together in the other group. This makes their path to the semi-finals easier. With this setup: 

• Two number one teams will definitely be eliminated before the semi-finals. 

• Two number two teams will surely reach the semi-finals. 

This does not reward teams for finishing first in the group stage. 

A fair system would be: 

• Each Super 8 group should have two number one teams. 

• Each Super 8 group should also have two number two teams. 

This way, both groups would be balanced. Every team would have an equal challenge. Finishing first in the group stage would actually give an advantage. 

In my opinion, this scheduling shows poor planning. Big tournaments like the T20 World Cup should be organized carefully. Fans expect fairness and smart decisions.

Good Human Being

It was an Australian Tennis Open two days ago. First round match. Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey, seeded number 112 in the world was playing 11th seeded in the world, Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova. As Alexandrova was serving for the second set to level the tie, the ball girl - stood beside the umpire's chair - fell flat on her back before quickly getting back up. 

At that point, Sonmez holds up her hand to pause the game, and the Turkish-born athlete walks over to the ball girl, placing the ball girl's arm over her shoulder in an effort to help her stay on her feet. 

The game between Sonmez and Alexandrova resumed after a six-minute delay, 

Afterwards, the Turkish player said: "I always say it is more important to be a good human being than a good tennis player," she added. "It was just my instinct to help her and I think everyone would do the same. I'm happy I got to help." 

Karma always rewards who does good thing. 112 seeded Zeynep of Turkey upset that day the 11th seeded Alexandrova of Russia 7-5 4-6 6-4. 

Monuments Named After Leaders

We always name some places or monuments after our departed leaders. For Example: 

Anna Nagar (Chennai) – Named after C. N. Annadurai, former CM of Tamil Nadu

Kamarajar Salai (Chennai) – Named after K Kamaraj, former CM of Tamil Nadu

Jawaharlal Nehru Road (in many cities) – Named after Mr. Nehru, former PM of India

Washington DC – Named after George Washington 

Charles de Gaulle Airport (Paris) – Named after Charles de Gaulle, former President 

In rare cases, places/monuments are named after sitting leaders. Some examples: 

Stalingrad – Named after Joseph Stalin in 1925 when he was in power. (Again renamed Volgograd in 1961)

Marcos Highway – Named during Ferdinand Marcos’s Presidency in Philippines

Now our own Donald Trump named himself to a monument.  Here are the details:

There is a large performing arts center in Washington, D.C., with theaters for music, dance, opera, and plays. It opened as National Cultural Center in 1958. This project was renamed the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1964 as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy after his assassination. 

Yesterday the Board of Directors of the Center unanimously approved the name change. A few months ago, Trump appointed himself as the Chairman of that Board. Now it is known as The Donald Trump and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Of course, the JFK family does not like this. And, law suits are coming challenging this name change. Their contention is the JFK name was established by an Act of Congress and only the Congress can make any changes and not the Board of Director of the Center. 

Good Bad Ugly (Tamil Movie)

This is a Tamil movie starring Ajit Kumar and Trisha. Directed by Adhik Ravichandran.

I usually like Ajit Kumar movies. But this one is worst. 

Ajit a notorious crime boss surrenders to police so he could reunite with his wife and son and lead a peaceful life. His wife Trisha is Chief Advisor to the Indian Embassy in Spain and living with her minor son. That son was arrested on a drug and murder charges. How Ajit Kumar saves his son is the story. 

Good Bad Ugly tries to be many things at the same time—action, comedy, and emotional drama—but it doesn’t do any of them well. The story feels confused, and scenes don’t connect smoothly. The movie is 2 hours and 15 minutes. It is 2 hours of shooting shooting and shooting. 

The actors look like they don’t know what their characters are supposed to do, and the villain is not scary or interesting. Even the emotional scenes feel fake and forced. 

In the end, the movie turns out to be messy and disappointing. Unless you are really bored or a big fan of Ajit, you can skip this one. 

One big flaw I noticed. Trisha is Chief Advisor to the Indian Embassy in Spain. In that case, she and her minor son will have diplomatic passport and diplomatic immunity. Even if the boy is guilty of murder, the Spanish Government cannot arrest him. All they can do is to deport him and his mother (Trisha) to their country (India) declaring them persona non grata.

A Real Story but not Real

There was a family in Delhi, looking for a house to rent. They saw a 4 BHK house. For Rent for Rs.750 per month. But the family can afford only Rs.450. The owner lived in Hissar. Hissar is 175 km by bus and it takes 4 hours to reach there. One of the sons wanted to go to Hissar and talked to owner and agree him to a Rs.450 a month rent. 

He takes a bus, travels for 4 hours, arrives in Hissar. He enquired with lot of people and arrives at the owner’ s residence. He was the General Manager of a large local company, He was lying on a bed and 2 guys were giving him body massage. 

This guy told him the reason for his travel. The owner said NO. By that time, it was getting dark. The owner said since it is getting dark there is no bus to Delhi. You stay with me for the night and go to Delhi the next morning. 

They had dinner together. 

After dinner, a most beautiful girl, who can be a movie actress, brought two plates of mango and served the owner and this guy. They ate the mango. She was the owner’s daughter. The owner wanted to go to the local social club and play cards. He took this guy to the club. He just watched while the owner played card. On the way home at 12 midnight, the owner told him he will rent the home for Rs.450 even though his asking price is Rs,750. 

Next morning, the owner told his driver to take his car and drop him in Delhi. 

Here is something not real. Usually in this type of story, the guy and the beautiful girl will fall in love and get married. But he never saw her again,

Remote Labor Outsourcing

Restaurants in USA pay the front end cashier who collects money from customers are paid $16 an hour. Now, these restaurants have come out with a novel idea. Outsource the cashier job. Now most of them employ Filipinos from Philippines for $3.15 per hour. Here is how it works: 

The restaurant (say, in New York) has a normal front counter with a camera, microphone, speaker, and a payment terminal (card reader, cash drawer, etc.). A customer walks up to order as usual. 

In Philippines, the “cashier” is actually sitting in a call center or at home overseas, connected via high-speed internet. Through a live video feed, the remote cashier greets the customer, takes their order, and enters it into the restaurant’s Point of Sale (POS) system remotely. The local restaurant staff just prepare the food and hand it over to the customer.

This works out in sit-down restaurants also. I am not explaining how it works here since this post will become too long. 

For card payments, the remote cashier can process transactions through the POS system. For cash payments, a local employee may handle the physical cash, but the remote cashier records the sale. 

Why it happens? 

Labor costs: U.S. restaurants face high labor costs (minimum wage in NYC is ~$16/hour). Hiring a remote cashier for $3–$4/hour through a staffing firm in the Philippines drastically reduces expenses. 

Labor shortages: Some restaurants struggle to find reliable local workers for cashier or front desk roles. 

Technology: Modern POS and video systems make this feasible with low latency and decent customer experience. 

In the U.S., this is technically legal, because the overseas worker is not employed under U.S. labor law. The restaurant contracts with a third-party outsourcing company abroad. 

Ethical concerns: Critics argue it’s exploitative — the pay ($3.15/hour) is very low by U.S. standards, though it can be a decent wage in the Philippines. 

Customer transparency: Most customers have no idea they’re speaking to someone thousands of miles away 

$3.15 per hour comes to a monthly salary of (in Indian rupees) Rs.48,000. Indians are world famous for under quoting in a competitive market. If they agree for $2.50 per hour, then their monthly salary comes to Rs38,133.

Generation

There was a news item that in Nepal young people, especially Gen Z, protested after the government shut down major social media platforms. I started to think what is Gen Z and what are the other Generations. Here is what I found. 

• The Silent Generation grew up during and after the Great Depression and World War II. Birth years 1925 to 1945. 

• Baby Boomers were born during the post-war population boom. Birth years 1946 to 1964. 

• Gen X (Generation X) often grew up with rising divorce rates, early computers, and more independence. Birth years 1965 to 1980. 

• Millennials (Gen Y) came of age during the internet explosion. Birth years 1981 to 1996. 

• Gen Z (Generation Z) grew up with smartphones, social media, and global crises like COVID-19. Birth years 1997 to 2012. 

• Gen Alpha is still growing up and their defining traits are still forming, but they're digital natives from birth. Birth years 2013 to 2025.

Just FYI.  Not any Government agency or organization gave out these names.  Marketing agencies use it to track demographics.  Academics and researchers define social trends around it,

US Open Tennis Drama

The U.S. Open tennis tournament always seems to come with its share of drama. Usually, it's something like a clash between two players or a heated moment between a player and the umpire — like when Serena Williams had that famous argument with the umpire in 2018, or when Daniil Medvedev got into it with the crowd a few years ago. Last week American player Taylor Townsend and Czech player Barbora Krejcikova got into an argument on court after their match. 

Two days ago, something different happened — this time, between two spectators. 

Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak had just won his match and was hanging out with fans, signing autographs and on tennis balls. He noticed a young kid in the crowd and, in a sweet gesture, took off his cap and handed it to the child. 

That’s when things took a turn. A man standing nearby suddenly grabbed the cap from the kid’s hands and just walked off with it. 

Turns out, the man is Piotr Szczerek — a millionaire and CEO of a company in Poland. When reporters asked him about it later, he didn’t apologize at all. Instead, he arrogantly said, “Yeah, I took it. I did it in a rush. But hey, first come, first served — that’s life.” 

At the time, Majchrzak didn’t see what had happened because he was still signing autographs. But when he found out later, he got in touch with the boy and his mother and gave them not just another cap, but also his shirt and a bunch of other gifts. 

Social media, as always, didn’t hold back. People were furious. Many called the CEO a jerk and a coward. One person summed it up by posting, “Only a complete idiot and jerk would snatch a hat from a child.”

PS: Latest news. September 1 6.58 pm California time. That Polish CEO apologized to that kid, the fans, and the Polish player.

Moderator Tom Brokaw asked Dan Quayle about his qualifications to become President. 

Quayle Replied: I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency. 

Lloyd Bentsen immediately retorted: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy."

Class Act

John West, a 64 year old man from Detroit, spent 34 years working at the Ford Motor Company. His five sons wanted to honor their dad, so they nominated him to be a contestant on the game show Deal or No Deal. 

During the show the (football team) Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford sent a video message wishing them luck—and offered autographed gym bags and tickets to their football game for him and his 5 sons; (This is equivalent to Tendulkar offering tickets to his match to a Mumbai fan on live television.). Of course, Detroit Lions Football team is owned by the Ford Family.

Then, Ford’s President of Global Operations, Joe Hinrichs, surprised John with a plaque honoring his 34 years of service at Ford. 

Final Surprise: 

John and his sons were invited to lunch at Ford’s headquarters with Bill Ford, the Executive Chairman of Ford Motor Company.  

I know this is a PR for Ford Motors. They must of have paid more than a million dollars for this. 

But still, I would consider this as a “Class Act” to honoring a 34 year service of a low level employee.

Thrilling Victory?

Yeah, India won the match by 6 runs, but it wasn’t exactly an amazing or exciting win. What really happened is that England basically gave India 64 extra runs — that’s a huge number, almost like handing them free runs without making them earn it. 

If England’s bowlers had been a bit more careful and not bowled so many wide balls or no-balls, India might not have won at all. The game was that close — just a 6-run difference. 

So, it feels more like England lost the game by messing up, rather than India winning it with great skill. A real thrilling win usually comes from a strong performance, but this one felt like India got lucky because of England’s mistakes.

The Final Word

The meeting room looked fancy—glass walls, shiny wood table, and a feeling so tense you could almost hear it crackle. Three clients sat on one side of the long table. They wore sharp suits and had serious looks on their faces. Across from them sat an older white man in a neat navy-blue suit. His white hair was combed perfectly, and he sat up straight, calm and confident. 

Next to him sat a young woman, probably in her late twenties. She was well-dressed and quiet, but there was something strong about her presence. She listened carefully, took notes, and watched everything. 

The clients asked all their questions to the older man—about numbers, partners, future plans. He answered smoothly, clearly experienced. The woman didn’t speak—just kept writing and paying attention. 

Then one of the clients leaned forward. “Last question,” he said. “Before we sign, we want to know how your company plans to grow and change over the next five years. We’re not just buying what you’ve done—we want to believe in where you’re going.” 

The room went quiet. 

The older man smiled and nodded. Then he turned to the young woman and said, “That’s not for me to answer. It’s for my CEO.” 

He motioned toward her. 

The clients looked surprised. The young woman straightened up, put her pen down, and looked each of them in the eye. 

“Innovation,” she said calmly, “doesn’t come from the past. It comes from looking forward. And here’s what we see coming…” 

Then she laid out bold plans: smarter use of AI, going green, choosing honest suppliers, and building a company that values speed and new ideas over old rules. She spoke clearly, for four full minutes. Nobody interrupted. When she finished, she folded her hands and waited.

Silence. 

Then the lead client nodded slowly, clearly impressed. “Well,” he said, signing the deal, “I guess that’s our answer.” As everyone stood up to leave, the older man leaned toward the young woman and whispered with a proud smile, “You always know the perfect time to speak up.” 

She didn’t say anything back. She just smiled.

English Language

The Liberian President Joseph Boakai visited President Trump in the White House. After they spoke. President Boakai said: 

"Liberia is a longtime friend of the United States, and we believe in your policy of making America great again,” 

Trump replied: "Well, thank you, and such good English,” "That's beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated? Where? In Liberia?" 

That shows Trump's knowledge of world affairs and countries and leaders

Liberia’s national language is English since 1847. 

A few world leaders speak in their country’s popular language when speaking with Trump even though they know English. (I would cite Mr. Modi for example. He can speak fluent English but spoke in Hindi. In my opinion that shows his arrogance. I would have appreciated and applauded him if he spoke in Gujrati, his mother tongue. (Trump does not know either Hindi or Gujrati.) 

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of having a translator. 

Advantages: Accurate Communication. Inclusivity and Respect. Time to Think and Strategize 

Disadvantages: Loss of Nuance and tone. Reduced personal connection. Slower communication. 

Long time ago, Dr. M. S. Venkataramani, who was a Professor at Jawarharlal Nehru University and established American studies department said: 

“Americans hate Indian leaders because when they (the Americans) say something the Indian leaders immediately reply in English. There was no waiting period like the leader waiting and smiling till the translator translate and he replies in his native langue and the translator translates in English and the leader is still smiling (instead of immediately getting angry and retorting). There is no body language of  retaliation when you have a translator".

Untold Story

Flight Lieutenant James Carter was in the Britain’s Royal Airforce. He generally flew the F-35 stealth plane. He was young, sharp and quiet. He had an ordinary uncomplicated life. But everything changed when he met Anjali, a Nurse from Kerala, at a small hospital in Norfolk where he had gone for a minor injury. 

Anjali was calm with a soft smile and warm eyes. Carter found more comfort in her presence than he had in the skies. They grew close. He realized he is falling in love with her. Anjali told him she is going to Kerala on vacation to see her mother. 

He missed her a lot. One morning he made a decision that was not in a training manual. He took off his F-35 on a routine mission. Half way through he reported a “technical issue” and asked for permission to make an emergency landing in Thiruvananthapuram Airport. 

Immediately, the Indian Air Force and the British High Commission were involved. But Lt. Carter slipped away from the airport with the help of a local police officer. 

He found Anjali in her neighborhood. Anjali was pleasantly surprised. She whispered “what are you doing here honey" 

They sat under the mango tree all night. No longer needed any word.

English Style

I am writing this post with a “tongue-in-cheek” frame of mind. This is meant to be more on the humorous side and not to hurt anyone. 

I took the idea of writing this post from a comment made by Mr. Kirtivasan Ganesan in my latest post. Therefore, I have dedicated this post to Kirtivasan. 

Following are the Indian English and their meaning:
