Maria and Sachin

(I was going to write how absurd to have a match for the third place in the World Cup.  All those 32 teams qualified for the World Cup are professionals.  In my opinion, any team can beat any other team on any given day.  All these teams vowed for the Championship.  It is a disgrace to make 2 of those teams to play for the third place.)

(But I am not going to write.  My strongest critic, my wife, LG, says she is tired of reading too many sports related posts.  Therefore, this will one will be the last.  Not for ever.  Just for a while.)

There was a news item that tennis player Maria Sharapova said she does not know who Sachin Tendulkar is.  Here comes most of the Indian newspapers and television channels “scolding” Maria for being so ignorant.  One newspaper (I think it is Hindustan Times) wrote:

We hope you read up on cricket soon, Maria.  Because this population that comprises 17.5% of the global population won’t take not knowing Ten(times God)ulkar lightly.

There are a lot of facebook attack also by the Sachin zealots.

This is just another cheap headline grabber designed to catch people in India who thinks the world revolves around them and everyone in the world knows (or cares) what happens there.

I fail to understand the purpose of this anger at Maria. Why should this thing be so shocking? Cricket is played and followed only in a handful of countries. Maria Sharapova does not come from any of those countries. Then why should there be an obsessive expectation that everybody in the world should know Sachin Tendulkar?

I’m not demeaning anybody’s greatness. I myself agree that Sachin is a legend, but would not expect everyone to know him.  Me, my wife, and son went all the way to England (Lords) and India (Chennai) to watch Sachin during the world cup a few years ago. I am sure he would not be offended by Maria’s remarks.

Just want to ask these guys if they know who Joe Montana is? He was the Quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, American Football team.  In his playing days, he was the highest paid athlete in the world.  But I know that no one outside the USA would know his name (possible exception is Canada).  Just wiki Joe Montana if you want to know more about him.

If someone asks Sania Mirza who Joe Montana is, I would bet she will say “never heard of him” and she would not recognize him from S#@t.  Will Americans get angry? No.  They will say the guy who asked that question to Sania is an idiot.

PS: Someone wrote in NDTV that 50% of India’s rural population do not know who Sachin Tendulkar is.

  1. I have to agree with your wife. Sports is the only topic that I am not much interested in, other than politics :) But you make them interesting with some facts that I am not aware of.
I saw posts on Facebook about this incident. Even I feel it was uncalled for. People worship cricket in India and that is the main reason why I do not like that sport.

  2. Thanks for your comments Ash. I agree with you. Criticizing Maria is uncalled for.

  3. I see nothing wrong with Maria Sharapova not knowing who Sachin Tendulkar is.
    Why should she?
She is a tennis pro, and a smoking hot one at that, and she doesn't care one bit about cricket, Indians or India.

Even I don't know who this Tendulkar guy is.
Maybe if he changed his name to Sachin Tennisdulkar...then Maria and I know will know more about him.

    Regards,
    Vijay Amritraj

  4. Thanks for your comments Vijay. I appreciate your dropping by in spite of your busy schedule.

You may be world famous. But, unfortunately, you are not number one in your own city, Chennai. Ramanathan Krishnan is. In your playing days you were ranked 16th in the world. In his playing days, Krishnan was ranked 6th in the world.

  9. This news created unnecessary outrage among Indians. Its absurd. So what if she doesnt know Sachin?

There was this who is maria sharapova memes and posts. Absurd!

  10. Nothing wrong in Sharapova being unaware of who Sachin is. Social media and media are only desperate for attention, "anything for fifteen minutes of fame" seems to be the mantra.

  14. She might have unveiled the truth. They might be possessing their gems numerous in number.

We have a few people like Sachin,so we load a lot of adoration for them.

Though you write much about sports,I think you choose the apt time for that.

  15. I was really baffled to know that so many people here got offended for Maria not to know who Sachin was! this is despicable!

I don't know football and except for one or two names I am ignorant of the so many famous players in that game.

And the media needs some 'breaking news' and they blow up moles into mountains.

  18. From this one can understand how "great a sport" is Cricket for Indians (or let me say most Indians) No wonder we have to cheer for other countries during the football world cup. I wonder when India will play.....

I remember you very well. A while ago I even wrote an email to you regarding someone needing help in Dubai. You had replied to that.

You are correct. No one care. Even Sachin won't care.

Lastly, I am not a "Sir". Please drop that word. Thanks Bikram.

  30. Ha haa :D Even I expected some sports news, when I saw your blog loading on my computer screen :) Being a person who has difficulty in understanding the art of sports, I hope to learn something about the same from you...

I think, Tendulkar fans would have not made it so big if media didn't hype it. Our media wants TRP that's it..

  34. Thanks for your comments Sandeep. And, welcome to my blog.

Did you read today’s statement by Sachin? He said he didn't expect tennis Maria Sharapova to know who he was since the Russia ace didn't follow cricket. He also said: "Sharapova's comments were not disrespectful. She doesn't follow cricket."

On a lighter note Sandeep. In my home I am more famous than Sachin. How come he doesn’t know me. My wife and 2 kids are going to protest.

Sandeep, please visit here as often as possible. Thanks.

  36. sachin always avoids controversies...thats his nature...he always tries to give politically correct statements....what do u expect him to say??.."no she. is lying she knows me"??..hahaha...in his place even i wud hv said the same thing publically or remained silent as he was all these 25 days.

  37. Thanks for your comments Sandeep. I did publish your other comments. You did not write that comment in this post. You wrote about Sachin on my post "World Cup Finals dated July 8, 2014.

At first I thought not to publish because of two reasons. 1. That post has nothing to do with Sachin. 2. It contained one bad word (BitxH).

    I published it any way.
